Will I have to pay for NHS treatment?

All adults over the age of 26 in Scotland must pay for the NHS dental treatment that they receive. NHS charges are set by the Scottish Government.

You will always be provided with an estimate of your treatment cost which on an NHS basis will not exceed £384.

Some adults may be entitled to free NHS dental treatment if any of the following apply:

You have had a baby in the last 12 months, or are pregnant

You receive any of the following benefits:

Income Support
Pension credit
Income-based Job Seekers Allowance,
Tax credits or have a current HC2/3 form.

The dental team may ask you to provide proof of exemption on the day of your appointment which can be in the form of a letter or document, as the Health Board investigates all benefits in relation to charge exemption.

  • I am not registered with a dental practice. Can I still receive NHS treatment?

At present we are unable to provide occasional dental care on an NHS basis for non registered patients, however resources are available if you are in need of urgent dental care.

We have a select number of Independent Emergency slots in order to accomodate urgent dental treatment.

For NHS urgent dental concerns, please call NHS 24 on 111 where you will be advised on how to receive the treatment that you require.

  • What if I need dental care in an emergency?

If you are registered with a dentist:

During opening hours, contact your practice at the earliest convenience where we will do our best to accomdate a same day appointment.

Outwith opening hours, you may call NHS 24 on 111 where an operator will further advise and provide an appointment for you if required.

  • Can you accommodate me as I work until late?

We understand it can be difficult to arrange appointments around work and other commitments.

At Maryhill Smile Care, members of our practice care plan are able to receive appointments outwith practice opening hours.

Find out more about the benefits of our practice care plan by visiting our Membership Plan page.

  • How often should I visit the dentist?

The NHS now offers only one examination every 12 months as compared to the previous 6 monthly checkups.

Some patients wish to visit the dentist on a more regular basis in order to monitor and maintain a high standard of Oral Health, which is a main benefit of our practice care plan.

Visiting your dentist on a regular basis significantly reduces the risk of many oral conditions including the early identification of oral cancer.

  • Can I register with you if I live outside Glasgow?

Of course! We are more than happy to accomodate you, whether you live one street down or an hour away!

We have many patients who travel to attend their appointments, as we always strive to provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

  • What happens if I cannot attend my appointment?

At Maryhill Smile Care we operate a strict cancellation policy.

We kindly ask that if for any reason you wish to cancel your appointment, that you notify us atleast 48 hours before your given appointment time.

This policy allows us to provide patients on our waiting list the opportunity to receive an appointment and accomodate any dental emergencies.

Please note that failure to comply with this policy will incurr a minimum fee of £20.

We thank you for your cooperation.

Childsmile Programme

Childsmile is a national programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland and reduce inequalities both in oral health and access to dental services.

The programme is also designed to welcome the children to the dental environment from a young age to promote dental health and reduce dental decay. From six months of age, dental appointments are made for the child on a regular basis.

This includes oral health advice, weaning advice, teething advice and toothbrushing instruction. We also provide free childrens dental packs, which include oral hygiene aids as well as fun activities to introduce children to a regular oral health regime.

Families can book an appointment directly at the practice or by referral from a dental health support worker.
